- Prepare a small business plan that will allow you to focus on your business goals
- How can your experience and education help you?
- What extra training or course might you have to take?
- How much extra money do you need to make per month? How soon do you have to start making money? Some businesses are easier than others to start.
- Is there a mentor that you can call on for help?
- If you are having trouble coming up with ideas for a business or part time work check with family and friends. They will have your best interests at heart.
- What ever you decide to do be professional and responsible.
- Establish short and long term goals. Be flexible you goals can always be adjusted.
- You may want to start by yourself but if time or volume of work becomes an issue there might be a friend or family member who can help. Remember you are a business person. Your customers and business image are important.
- Check the local community bulletin boards and newspaper to see what people are buying, selling and advertising.
- Keep an open mind. You never know what may develop.
- A computer and basic computer skills is a real advantage. Whether you use them for research and studying or directly for your business.
- Some people say, “Oh I can not do that I don’t know.” Never let that stop you! Research, study, learn from someone else, take a course do what ever is necessary to achieve your goal!
- If one business idea does not work try something else. You have to focus on succeeding.

A friend of mine who took early retirement from working in the office at the local high school. She has a spare room in her place and started a stained glass business. If you are lucky and you supply a pattern and material she may be able to fit you in on shorter notice but I would not count on it. There is an older gentleman that would like to retire. Economic conditions will not allow it but he is handy with wood. He builds whirligigs and dog houses in his garage then displays them on his front yard. I drive by his house regularly his inventory seems to be turning over consistently with a greater assortment on display.
A student I know has developed some good internet skills and now has a small but growing affiliate business on the internet. I know because I receive his emails.
